Community Orchard volunteer session, Saturday 29th January and February 2022, 10.30am - 12.30pm

There is quite a lot to do in the orchard at this time of year so we are holding two volunteer sessions in the next few weeks. We'll be doing winter jobs: pruning, weeding, mulching and checking guards and posts. Please come along to help and maybe learn something new about caring for trees. Rendezvous at the south end of Ladywell Fields, near the Bournville Road entrance. Boots and old clothes recommended. Under 16s only with close supervision. Please bring your own gloves and (sharp) secateurs if you have them, but some will also be available to borrow. Please email ladywellfields@yahoo.co.uk if interested, so we can gauge numbers and let you know if we have to cancel due to wet weather.

For those interested, there is also the opportunity to do some orchard maintenance on Fridays. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Egyptian Geese on a visit

A pair of Egyptian Geese have made their home in Ladywell Fields.  In Britain, this species is found mainly in East Anglia at sites with open water, short grass and suitable nesting locations.  They disperse in winter along many rivers where they feed on grass and cereals. Egyptian geese usually pair for life. 

While in Ancient Egyptians considered them sacred, they may be shot in modern Britain if causing problems.  Please note, our pair are not causing any harm in Ladywell Fields.  

Community Memorial to those who died from Coronavirus

In the week when the number of Coronavirus related deaths sadly is set to pass the 100,000 mark, local people have put up an improvised Covid memorial in the North Fields next to the tennis courts and the bridge to the hospital. This is intended to create a space to remember people that died at a time when we can't be physically together. Follow at https://www.instagram.com/covidmemorialuk/.  

Ladywell Lakes

Ladywell Fields has temporarily acquired two new lakes in the South Field.  The attractive addition to the local landscape was caused by heavy rainfalls on Wednesday.    

There is a small stream in this area of the park which swells in wet weather. 

The photos shows the upper of the two lakes.  The lower lake may flood the path, so caution is advised when taking walks.
